The Root

“I’m trying not to be so bitter and to embrace what’s ahead of us. It’s possible these kids will sleep at some point, I suppose. In the meantime, I’ve promised to stop referring to one of the boys as “extra” and have told my wife I will try to refrain from calling my first-born son “the free one.”

With four months left to go, I’m not sure what stage we’re in at the moment — but it’s not acceptance. My wife and I even both privately admitted that we don’t like the new children, which is of course insane. Excited? We’re not there yet. Terrified? Yes, when we’re not practicing denial.

They say the most important thing is the kids’ health — but what about ours?”

So that was a long quote from the end of the article, but I felt that the whole section was worth sharing. I don’t want to just condemn this dad as a loser, or anything like that, because that’s not productive (and I can understand why the prospect of having two more kids to take care of in a one bedroom apartment could be less than exciting).

I don’t blame the guy for feeling this way. Feelings are tough to control, and that’s that. What I do take issue with, though, is that his feelings aren’t being treated for what they are—fear and selfishness. Fear and selfishness are wrong, but you’re not immediately a loser for having them; you’re just human. What you are immediately a loser for is treating fear and selfishness like they’re perfectly okay, and that’s what this article does. Fundamentally, the article is rationalizing and supporting some of the worst parts of human nature. Writing it does that, publishing it does that, and reading it nonchalantly does that.

It’s disappointing to me that “reduction” (aborting one of the twins) is discussed in this article as a legitimate option and dismissed only on the basis that it feels Machiavellian, but what takes us to this point isn’t a basic scientific/rational argument that abortion is okay; it’s the decline of culture to the acceptance and encouragement of the ugliest and darkest facets of human nature.
